“Akshay Kumar delivers a Holi blockbuster with his Battle of Saragarhi”

“despite being one of the fiercest last stands ever, the Battle of Saragarhi is lost somewhere in the annals of history. In Kesari, director Anurag Singh brings alive on celluloid the incredible story of 21 Sikh soldiers fighting valiantly against 10,000 Afghan troops. Though the audience knows how it will end, the way the filmmaker tells this tale is worth a watch. Kesari is the rousing patriotic film that Akshay Kumar fans wait for all year round. But it is a lot more than just that and deserves a watch this Holi”

“Anurag Singh’s direction is neat and uncomplicated. The sequences flow very well although in the first half, he could have done a better job. He manages to stir anger towards Afghans among the viewers. Also, the 21 Sikh soldiers are actually fighting on behalf of the British and this angle could have affected the impact. But the director takes care of this aspect nicely. Throughout the second half, one just roots for the 36th regiment and want them to emerge victorious. On the flipside, one wishes the execution was little better at certain points”

“With technical brilliance, intricate writing and thundering performances, Kesari is a loud war cry that evokes strong feelings of patriotism and it also wrenches your heart with its climactic tragedy. The visceral power of its visuals and emotions is staggering”

“yet another patriot act”

“Kesari has a ragtag bunch of soldiers—quite like the cricket team in Lagaan—that Ishar Singh has to bring together. Years later, the peripheral characters of the 2001 film—be it Lakha, Bagha or Kachra–still make for instant recall. It would have, perhaps, worked with good casting and performances supporting the main lead. However, in the one-man show, none of the other characters or actors turn out memorable. All that has stayed on with me is the landscape—the brown, arid earth pitted against the majesty of the snow-laden, silver mountains. If only panoramic settings could make a good film”
